Today I built a jury rig antenna post out of ABS pipe. It stands about 14' tall and the J Pole antenna I made is at the top. Using my UV5R on 2 meters and 5 watts I can get a solid 58 km station to station. VERY pleased.

Well, my order did not arrive. Too bad, at $38 a radio, the UV-5R was a great price. Unfortunately, CBSA did not allow the order into Canada. I did get a speedy refund. I have since attempted another order, prices did go up a bit. So, only time will tell if the CBSA will allow the next order through.

Cheers,

MM.

MM... Curious what the problem was with your order...? Did CBSA give a reason? I got mine from Hong Kong with no issues. Has something changed?

JAB,

Had nothing to due with my specific order, it had to do with the entire shipment. One or more items in the shipment displeased CBSA and they sent the whole thing back. The feeling I got from the company was, they ship entire containers of product into Canada, then distribute once over here. Of course, I may not understand their shipping procedures.

I have since ordered again, not sure if they are from the same company, but same radio. $2 more. I will let you know how this order goes.

The programming cable and software disk has arrived and the car adapter has too. Just need the radio.

I was at Industry Canada's website to try out the Radio Operator test generator (http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/025.nsf/eng/h_00040.html) It worked well. The analysis chart at the end sure helps to determine which areas need more studying. I seem to have forgotten most of my electrical theory, funny 30 years ago I was very good at this in physics class, LOL.

Cheers,

MM.

Here is an excellent link to information for those interested in the listening side of Long Distance Communications. Practical advice, information and antenna plans, plus the ability to pick the brains of those who know.

Here is a link to the site for RAC, the organization that coordinates amateur radio clubs in Canada.  Lots of information.

Enjoy.

JAB,

Thanks for those links.

The new radios did arrive without incidence. The 82 unit is larger than the 5V, but both seem to do the same job. Have to wait til I am licensed before I can take them for a test drive.

Studying continues for the HAM exam.

Hey MM. Glad they are helpful for you. I bit the bullet and got the book to study for my ham certificate as well. Better to be legal and enjoy it than wondering when/if the hammer is going to drop...LOL.
