out of country
« on: May 28, 2016, 11:45:57 AM »
Just trying to get  a feel for what you guys think of this subject
Now i have been fighting fires since 2003 far from an expert but i know  my way around  a bit
Im what they call at the government level "industry "
Now industry is a torn in governments back side
Alberta as had its problems  now last week there was an announcement to bring 1000 more firefighters witch is great considering the size of the problem
Ok 1000 firefighter why 500 of them out of country?
Can some smart scholar answer
Alberta as high unemployment they would gladly go
Fight fire in there backyard but no we get the southafricans and Americans start in your province and your country
Best regards
Griz

Liability..root cause...

Most worker compensation will not pay out for someone doing someone else job..

You can't ask a tool and die maker to go fight a fire when he has never done it before in his life...same as asking a banker to go fight in a war,he would get hurt sue the government and we would all have to pay through our eye teeth

Its to bad the system is set up this way but better to have pro's do the job right the first time then someone who has no idea what they are doing and have to fight it 3-4 more times

Plus add in the additional cost to train them to do that job if time is important and the fire is spreading or getting worse they need help now and fast

just my 2 cents

and hey griz how are ya

I have to agree to disagree
We train uneversity student to be fire fighters they are eighteen or nineteen they studying in computer science we push industry out of the way to give these guys a summer job
They cant fixe a pump or run power saw but they have papers that say they are qualified witch is bs
I've been falling trees for over 30years and still aint accepted firefighter
Now in bc every tree planter logger timber cruzer and mining exploration ect ect as to have there s100 wich is a 3 day course for fire fighting it is mandatory but worth nothing
Now put albertans from the forest industry true a week long boot camp and u have what u need take more than a week to get them out of africaor the states
Doctors have gone to war dye makers have fought fires we need to give our people the chance to do the right thing
Ask anyone in fortmac if they want to fight that fire and im sure the kindegarden teacher will be on front lines
Im sure out of 90000 people theres 5000 more than qualified to deal with it
As for me im good bein bizy from work on pipeline thats no gona happen to fighting  fire and lets not forget gardening

I agree with kelee. Also you have the issue of equipment, clothing (safety equipment etc)  and infrastructure that will no doubt accompany those firefighters. I completely understand your question and frustration but firefighters are highly trained both in the 'how' and in the use of equipment and safety. It would be the same as the Army making up new battalions of infantry and as soon as they had the numbers ship them off to fight without training, unfamiliar equipment etc. The designated time for a civilian to become a basic infantryman in the Cdn Forces is about 230 days. Just an example.
THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS... ONLY OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOLUTIONS

Part of the problem, at least concerning the Fort Mac cleanup, is that the company who was awarded the contract was based out of Ontario. According to their contract, they can only hire out of the Ottawa valley or some shit like that. I got that news from the local radio station.
Never stop...

The reason is the same we bring in the fall out of country workers to pick our veges and fruits on our farms. We do it every year while our unemployment is 7%.

Seems like people have a vision of what a wildland fire fighter is supposed to look like and how trained they are well sorry its not and to me still does not justify getting outside  the country help

But they can SING! 300 south Africans arrived, and sang their way into your hearts. But did they bring any water bombers?

prolly gov thinks we are finally getting SOMETHING outta the zillions of $$ worth of aid we sent these countrys.

but I agree with griz.  so many folks outta work who be good candidates for training.

and whos to say these Africans had training?

their gov?

Its like when I lived in BC and watched everyday as whole mountain sides of raw logs were exported, only to be brought back as finished products for us to pay for.

do we not have empty factories and unemployed folks?

we should never be sending raw materials outta country..

sry to divert thread.
of all the things I,ve lost.. I miss my mind, the most
