Root Cellar Photos
« on: October 15, 2015, 12:52:00 PM »
Hi all!  I realize I have been MIA for a while, but with summer and health issues, I haven't been on much.  I will most definitely make an effort to get back in loop!

I do have a request/favour to ask anyone who has built their own root cellar.  I work as a writer, mostly a ghostwriter for others, and have been doing a LOT of writing on prepper topics for prepper sites.  One of my clients is writing a self-sustainability book and needs a chapter written on constructing a root cellar.  Now, I can describe the process, but I haven't made my own, living in the middle of the city, so I don't have photos to go with it.  If anyone has photos of the process of building their root cellar and is willing to let me use them, that would be super.  Please know in advance that no credit will be given for these photos as this is a ghostwriting project, but what I produce will help others who want to learn to live self-sustainably.  Just give me a shout here or via PM.  Thanks!

Lots of good ideas there Zek. One of these days I would like to try my hand but it won't be for a while just way too much to do.
It may never happen. Best to be prepared just in case.

them pix gave me lotsa ideas.

a project for next yr.

I have 3 rr ties..

I have 6 x8ft cedar poles, and sink them 2ft in the ground. 3 per side

then I can lay the rr ties across on top and use as a brace by undercutting.

the unprights can then have cedar logs laid (one on top of the other) til they reach the top. and backfilled as it goes up..

this would be the sides of an 8x8 square.

the same principal for the ends, leaving out the door.

the (now open) 3 trussed roof can then be covered with more cedar logs. I have lotsa cedar trees.

after the top is covered with logs. tar paper.. plastic.. tar paPER.. dirt

the sides would need tarpaper also as the logs are going up.

the interier would be cedar logs.

one suggestion for plastic/tarp covering... billboards..

the billboards you see along the hwy are not paper anymore.. they are a printed heavy gauge plastic.

theres a place in london that sells them .

they are about 45ft long by 12? 14?

to spend a bit more $$ the 4x8 sheets of rigid insulating styrofoam could be added to the walls and roof.

9 would do the job.

another option is bales of straw against the tarp/plastic, and then backfill/cover.

I,m liking the straw.
