Dehydrator
« on: July 03, 2015, 08:42:41 PM »
Got a dehydrator last fall, and finally got to use it tonight. Pulled up a few dozen onions. Looks like I will have 4-5 loads worth. Might take 3 days to get them done, but I love dried onions.

check out yard sales or watch Canadian Tire for them to go on sale..

we had 7 of them it total and they could run for couple days doing the tomatoes from the garden...

we are down to 4 now as we are sizing down on everything...

when you get further on in dehydrating...buy some window screen and make liners for your shelves(zeker taught me this trick) some of the foods you dehydrate will stick to the plastic, you can pull the screen off and this will make for easier removal of tomatoes, zucchini etc

The newest dehydraters we bought from CT are compactible..the trays go a little flatter..I am not to impressed by these new ones..like the older ones better

the screen also stops the tiny pieces from falling thru the racks when you move things around.

if you want to get the onion smell out of the dehydrater, do a batch of potatos next.

works like a charm.

I was surprized at how shallow the trays were (Excaliber) Thought they would be deeper. Left it on 6 hours last night, just going out to check it.

if you dont have a dark/cool place to put the jars, just wrap each jar in brown paper.

sunlight degrades

Don't need a screen, it came with mats, and some kind of paper like stuff for making candy stuff. Non sticking. When you do potatoes, do you cook/whip first? Do you add butter/milk, or anything?
