Hygiene.

If anyone suffers with calloused feet, I have a tip for you. Orbital sander. Been doing it for about 10 years now and I got weird looks from people when I tell them what I do. First I start with a 120 grit paper and medium-light pressure until the callous is about 80% removed. Then I use 400 grit to smoothen it out. Repeat as necessary as skin grows (every 4 weeks or so) and eventually no more bleeding heels. Finish off with a shower or foot bath and then lather on some lotion.

People get freaked out by this because it is a power tool but the vibration massages the foot as well.

Saw this and had to add a comment... My better half has a callous that I take the dremel to every once in a while. She wasn't too willing at first but saw the benefits after the first go around. Only thing with performing this on someone else is you don't feel it when it starts to get tender :) Made her yip a time or two

Be VERY careful doing any kind of care to the feet of those with diabetes or any sort of peripheral vascular disease. Healing times are greatly extended and there is a high risk for infection.
THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS... ONLY OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOLUTIONS

Roman legionaires used to rub sea salt on their feet and hands to toughen the skin and control over callousing.
Never stop...
