Actually I think that the external "tool boxes" are a good idea. They free up spice in the vehicle and they add to the robustness of the vehicle to deflect projectiles.
It may never happen. Best to be prepared just in case.

zeker,

Maybe the tool box can be filled with sand for weight in the winter and light armour in hostile neighbourhoods. But you may want to add more tool boxes.

The glass is probably laminated, and enough protection from small arms, or maybe not.....

Of course, if the MG operator is keeping their heads down, they might not be able to take accurate potshots??
