growing your own tobacco
« on: August 20, 2013, 08:40:02 PM »
Have you tried to yet..tobacco is a very fussy plant to grow..it take time and patience and for the big huge size they grow to well the seeds are smaller then the end of a sharpened pencil

I grew some a few years back and here are some links to the pictures..I started them late in the season and eventually brought them indoors..but they did not last..

next spring I will try again, I finally have enough raised beds made to grow some...please be careful if you do the leaves can be toxic if handled to much and watch pets around them

These ones are called Kelly Green Leaf..I have about 5 different varieties, some can be used for pipes and cigarettes...

growing your own tobacco could be a great barter trade item

The first package I got this year, grew to about 1 inch and then all died off...looked like damping-off disease.  I bought another package, bought new soil and started again.  From the hundreds of tiny seeds, about a dozen sprouted.  I now have about 6 plants that are about a foot tall, and 3 that are still only an inch or two.  I brought one of the big ones, and one little one, inside last night...we'll see how they do.

I'm not a smoker, but thought the plant looked nice, and who knows...it may come in handy some day, to know how to grow tobacco, eh?
