Crap, out here in Alberta, the big thing is oil.  Not much chance of the Alberta government doing the same thing anytime soon.

It is wise to be cautious when dealing with add like these. Some are legit some are not. Some will install everything for you set up a joint back account to share the profits. Beware of these. Others will offer you a service install the system you get the profits but few people can afford to buy the system outright. The companies will arrange a long (20 year) loan that you are responsible for. So you get saddled with the debt! If you are interested you must do a lot of research and get at least three quotes.

So far, I've paid for my own.  It isn't large enough by any means yet, but I try to keep building on it.

I built mine too but when I was looking to expand I was contacted a few of these types of companies. While they did use a local installer there prices were high. The first quote was $32,000. I told them to go fly a kite. A month later they contacted me again and offer a reduction to $22,000. That was quite the reduction! I found that I could do everything between myself and the local installer for $12,500. So would I recommend these type of companies?

I knew a guy, a good guy, who was a close relative of this gentleman and he certainly did not have a very high opinions of him. That was good enough for me.

Looking into the "deal" we find.... it is a lease. You are committed for 20 years. They install this on your roof. They get the money from the Government or utility for 20 years. They send you a check every year which amounts to them paying to rent your roof. At the end of 20 years you get to have a 20 year old system with all the potential headaches. During your committed 20 years what happens if you need a new roof? Who pays to have the system removed and reinstalled? Do you grant them permission to enter your home to inspect their equipment at any time? Can they come on your property to inspect the panels on your roof? Are you responsible for trees that infringe on the level of sun that powers the panels? Do you have to negotiate with your neighbors so they don't allow trees to infringe? What is the cost if you choose to opt out? Can you opt out? How does it affect the sale of your home? Does the new buyer have to assume the contract as part of ownership? Do you have to pay a penalty if they don't want it? Hmmmmm.... sounds wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!
As well this is a grid tie system. You cannot use the power for your own use.
