TOOLS TO SURVIVE OR BE INDIPENDENT
« on: January 24, 2014, 07:31:25 PM »
What tools do you have that are necessary for long  time survival or just to keep you independent. I mean hand tools that you need after" no gas" or not be dependent on gas.
For my meet supply - rabbits ,chicken ,goats I need hay so I have tools for cutting and handling hay and little buggy to get it home.
For getting wild meet- guns, tons of ammunition, snow shoes, traps, ropes,  all kind of knifes, lot of canning jars and good size smoke house.
For processing food different hand grinders, sausage stuffers, lot of salts and preservatives.
For cooking cast iron and st. steel dishes , 2 wood burning cook stoves, food driers.
For fire wood many different axes, different saws, buggy to bring it home.
For construction all the tools I could think of. (too many to mention)
Where am I SHORT ???

This is a work in progress list and contains some equipment and supplies as well as tools. I extracted it from inside another document, (a list for a self-sufficient estate) so the formatting is kind of off.

This list is not a minimum, nor even a maximum list. It is more a pick and choose list for those that have both general interests and interests of specialty subjects that might be of important in the PAW.

It includes items that could be of use to those with the training to use them, that have lost their own tools, or are caught away from them for some reason, and to provide the means to use training one might receive through study or the experience of others.

Not everyone will want or need all of the items listed. There is some duplication across the various areas that would not be needed in one set of tools.

The list is intended to be something to promote thinking about the future and future needs, during normal times, as well as the PAW.

No, I don't have all the tools and supplies listed. I only have a small selection of hand tools at the moment.

Just being straight and honest. Was brought up in very simple and self sufficient society and also working few years back in places where they still live that way I have to say 90 % of the stuff on the list is not needed for simple post disaster life.
Ones the situation settles (could be years) than there would be plenty of stuff around. For a good while we will be busy protecting and surviving- gathering food, heat and building community.
Last 20 years living in a bush and I built my house from scratch by myself , had a very good business with very , very few basic tools just using logic and very, very hard work.
That where ingenuity comes to work.
For example: plum - nail hanging on string,  level- clear tubing filled with water.
When surviving the most important is your brain.

Henry you hit the nail on the head so to speak with your comment on a nail hanging from a string to function as a plumb bob.  You are absolutely correct in saying that in any SHTF situation your brain is your most important asset.

Sometimes what is hard for us to comprehend is that the knowledge that we have is not necessarily shared by others. There are many who have do not know what a plumb bob is let alone use one. We grew up and lived using to tools to build things and perform many and varied tasks. This is not necessarily been the case for a number of years.  We look at that exhaustive list and say yep got that, got that too, don’t need that I can male one, don’t need that one either  because I can use …whatever. In the end it is knowledge, knowledge of the tool, knowledge of the task for which it was intended and knowledge of when its use is applicable that is of importance.

I believe that am like you; I think that there is nothing like having the right tool for the job. Also I believe that you can’t ever have enough tools. If I don’t have the right tool I make something that will work. However I fear that we may be in a minority in that we build things, fabricate things and repair things. The majority of people don’t. They will purchase things, take things for repair or throw them away. There are a number of reasons for this. They have never known any different approach, they lack the knowledge on how the item works let alone the skills to repair it or they don’t have the inclination or patience to learn. Most of all it is more convenient to do so. In a culture that it 100% geared to being a consumer society can we really blame them? We did not grow up with that culture and we are fully aware that things are very different in most parts for the world. I think that this knowledge alone is a blessing.
It may never happen. Best to be prepared just in case.

Hey iRC.  The best advise and the whole idea (AT LEAST FOR ME) for survival is in one of yours sentences:
IF I DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TOOL I MAKE SOMETHING THAT WILL WORK.
It is self explanatory.

Speaking of alternative tools and ways to do things...
My Dad always uses a "water level" when he sets in footings, posts, etc...
It's just a chunk of clear tubing with water in it.  Lots of ways to use it.  He usually tie straps one end to something that wont move (important).  Then use the other end to mark off a level line anywhere else.  The water in the tubing will always sit in the same place in the tube.  Works every time.

I still have the tubing I used to level my basement walls building my house in the bush. With  long tubing you can level your whole basement walls from one corner to the other. Just remember there are some thousands of years old structures built with very primitive tools (good brains) that we would have hard time to do with the most modern tools.
I just love buying these simple tools at the auctions.

Thanks guys.

It is a long list. I just wish people would take it as intended, as a reference, not a go out and buy everything list the way some seem to think it is. That was never my intention. Something non-tool people can use to find out what might be available to do a specific task they are contemplating doing now or in the PAW and for  experienced tool users to reference things outside their normal area of expertise.

Just my opinion.

I can say I am already living very simple (very happy) life , that is very close to what I call self sufficient post disaster life. Mostly with the basic tools I have I use my innovative mind and hard work. I still believe that over 90% of the list is waste.
Just go in your mind trough possible scenarios that you may experience in case of different disasters to survive.
Why would I gather tools that I do not even know how to use or do not intend to use.
That where community comes to play , where different people bring different expertise and different tools.
That what I see people doing now , every time they need little screw they run C. Tire , instead using imagination.
I believe after disaster for quite some time we would be very busy just to stay alive, it is very hard to eat tools.
That is my thinking anyway. (almost can say was there, did it)

Well put Henry, a few things to add though, if you have the means to make tools; ie, a forge, hand saws, files, scrap metal, you can overcome almost any obstacle. While I'm at best a rank novice when it comes to blacksmithing, I still managed to build a fairly good forge on my own. I'm sure that as time goes by , with more practice, I'll get better. Skill developement is the operative phrase.

Some small examples that I've done myself are, making a steam bottle out of an old 20lbs propane tank; which I just used yesterday to thaw my water lines and pressure tank; built my own forge, make my own charcoal,( to burn in the forge ) and am currently building a horse drawn wood sledge. Some future projects are the green house and some cordwood buildings- small shop, chicken coops, and a cabin. The point is simply put, if you have not done something before, don't let fear hold you back. If you can foresee a time when you will need these things, then try it out, and work out the bugs along the way. Don't let fear of the unknown hold you back. Learn these things now, you won't regret it. Remember, it's better to be looking at it, than looking for it...LOL
