Railway Maps
« on: January 21, 2014, 08:53:19 AM »
Anyone know of a good source for active and inactive railroad maps in Canada?  I'm having trouble finding anything good.
I'd like to have them as alternative routes in the event regular roads are impassable.
One good thing about railroads is that they pretty much travel "as the crow flies" from one destination to another.  Following one would be the shortest route between two areas and may avoid a lot of trouble along the way.

Normal military maps always show railway beds, either inactive or active.
Government Topographical maps do show railway beds that are inactive or active.
Look to trail associations and skido clubs they have maps and are normally mainly old railway beds, with offshoots for other trails.

In Durham and the Kawarthas, up to the Muskokas all of the trail maps/ hiking groups and  skidoo clubs have maps, the main lines are easy to see as they are indicated deactivated rail lines, or just look at how they are laid out. Easy to see rail lines that way.

Try Google maps, either topographical and then satelite, start where you know there are railway lines then follow and track along from there. I did this for a certain area, as an alternate route to follow and use with my bike and trailer setup.
