Greetings from Greenguy
« on: July 09, 2013, 09:48:37 AM »
Hello CanAm Preppers!
Greenguy here.  I've been prepping for a few years now.  I've met a few of you along the way.  Looking forward to meeting more!
I'm pretty comfortable with my level of prep as it relates to food, water, shelter, electricity and heat.
My weaknesses (as I see them) are in communications, EMT, wilderness survival.
I'm working on those areas now as much as I can.
Hopefully I can continue to learn from those here that have more experience!
Cheers!

Welcome Greenguy... does that stand for green as newbie or environment?? LOL!  Yes communications is something I have started to think more about as well.. the  phone, and cell service in  High River was still out off and on this afternoon. The first week it was terribly frightening to watch people try to get a hold of loved ones, and to find information about their homes.

I believe it is important to think in layers of communication. With landline and cellphones out of service we must devolve to a listening mode. We have been spoiled by modern communication and it is of course hard to slow down and wait for news. In your "every day carry" it is good to have a portable AM/FM radio with which you can monitor local news and information. Depending on your situation and geographical location (distance) it may also work to have GMRS capability between family members. With this you can also scan local channels and communicate with others who also have this. Not ideal of course but better than nothing. Thoughts?

Thank you all for the warm welcome!
Regarding communication, I'm working toward my basic ham radio ticket right now.  The ability to both gather information and communicate is something I view as critical.
My name however is a play on the environmental side of my life.

Howdy GreenGuy,
I wrote a welcome to you yesterday, but it looks like it was eaten along the way :(
