Norwalk Virus
« on: March 17, 2014, 06:12:44 PM »
We have confirmed Norwalk virus.
I work in long term care and we have confirmation that Norwalk virus is in some of the homes for the aged mostly in southern Ontario. I know where I live Manitoulin Island we have Norwalk like conditions on the western side of the island confirmed by Sudbury Health Unit.

There is actually a medication that has been developed in Germany that kills C-Difficile but they won't put on the market because of funding and costs to produce.

One of the treatments for C Diff is a fecal transplant which is exactly what it says. C diff caused by the use of antibiotics occurs due to the usual bowel flora that controls the c diff bacteria being killed and the c diff runs rampant. When the antibiotics are stopped the fecal transplant recolonizes the bowel with the healthy, normal bacteria that are supposed to be there. It is a highly effective treatment. Icky yes..... but it works.

We are talking about two different ailments here:

1. A virus, Norwalk virus
2. A bactria, C-Difficile

As JAB says C-Difficile  is often a result of extensive use of antibiotic. Norwalk virus does indeed tend to be found quite often on cruise ships but it can occur anywhere where mass food is produced or there is close contact and hygienic precautions not taken. Hence it can also be found in nursing homes.  Noroviruses are found in the stool or vomit of infected people and the spread of the virus can be completely eliminated if normal hygiene precautions are followed. The people in nursing homes also tend to spend more time in hospital because of their general health and thus are necessarily exposed to antibiotics which in turn makes them susceptible to C-Diff.
It may never happen. Best to be prepared just in case.
