Title: hello from SW Ontario
Post by: missmarple on August 26, 2013, 02:33:49 PM
Hello. I am in SW Ontario. I have been storing food for 4 yrs. food and some other supplies. I live alone in an apt. so am very limited in what I can do to prepare, however I can eat quite well for a long time without shopping, if I have to. I began with mostly store-bought canned food, then I found freeze-dried foods and now have quite a supply of that. I like FD because it lasts a long time in the #10 cans. I have been learning to use my FD food, making up recipes, and then making "meal in jar" type meals with my FD foods.
My dream would be of course to live outside of town with chickens and garden and more able to survive what is coming, but at the moment I dont know how to make that happen so I do all I can do, which is store food, some water, water filter, (I have an Aqua-Rain), and just educate myself as best I can on what is happening in the world, and in our country. I am 63 and have no car and limited income, but I have managed to store a LOT of food, but I started 4 yrs ago. a little at a time got it done

missmarple,

Welcome to our forum. I am sure you will enjoy your time here.

The challenges of prepping in a restricted space are many, and many on here are in that situation. Please share some of what you have learned to solve some of these challenges. We all learn when someone shares their story.

Cheers,

Mountainman.

Greetings and Salutations Miss Marple.
I too hail from SW Ontario. Looking forward to meeting you should we get a Meet going in this area again. Your dream parallels mine, as I'm stifled in the city but my mate is not. :-[
Keep up the good work. ;D

Hello fellow SWO resident!
I'm with you on wanting to be more independent.  I also switched from canned food storage to dehydrated and freeze dried food for their longer shelf life.  I've been squirreling it away for a few years now.   It's got a "best before" date of 15-25 years from now.   My kids will go off to college in 4 and 8 years from now, so I'll send the older stock to school with them so they'll always have something to eat in the cupboard.   That will be my food rotation event.
I remember eating whatever was available when I went to school.  Sometimes that meant getting creative with the ketchup.
I'd rather my kids didn't have to go through that.
Sorry for the wandering off-topic.
Welcome aboard and like Ranger said, we hope to meet up in the future.

Hello, MissMarple...love your books and tv shows, btw ;)  I am new here, as well, so am still looking around.  It looks like a cozy place, I wonder who is in charge of tea?

"missmarple" is a tv crime-solver in 1940,50s England. :) you can watch her solve crimes on youtube, lol. as for me, I am just an old lady in Canada.
meal-in-jar recipes can be found on  youtube as well. I began using those as a starting place but I ended up making my own. similar I guess, but I like different seasonings than most of them use. I guess I can post my own recipes in the food storage section.

Well like my Great Aunts would say, "you sound more like a feisty old broad than an old lady" so take that as a complement from me.
Thanks for the reference to the older TV reference as well.
Posting Food recipes made by members is a great idea. I am also looking for some good bottle your own soup and other things recipies, please and thanks!

Hello,

My name is Rick.  My wife and I just moved to London from Alberta.  I have Canadian Army Infantry experience and have always been an avid hunter/outdoorsman.  We are fairly new to survivalism and prepping but have studied avidly and began purchasing the necessaries.  Of course it is always a work in progress but we are now at the point we would like to get a group together in the London area.  My email address is paratus80 at gmail dot com (paratus80@gmail.com), please get back to me if you have any interest in sharing some ideas at a meeting here in London in the new year.

Regards,

Rick F

Crumlin is a decent range.  Really good if you like skeet.  I have connections there but am an EESA member myself.
