Moving Foreward
« on: April 02, 2015, 04:32:57 PM »
Everyone on this forum is interested in prepping while their degrees of preparedness may vary everyone  has a plan and in just about every case each plan is different.

My plan for the last few years has been to bug in. Now I also realize that under certain conditions  a bug out may be called for and to that end I have a plan B and a plan C. All the locations for  plans A, B and C are sound. There is always room for improvement in a plan.  To that end we decided that we would take a long hard look at plan A.

Plan A is bugging in at our current location. For many this would seem like the almost perfect location a few acres set in Northern Ontario, on a lake that is part of a large river system, one mile from a highway, about two hours away from cities with a population of  25,000 or greater and twenty minutes to the nearest town of over 2,000. But we could always do better.
To that end for the last three years we have been looking for land and  we had a pretty strict set of criteria.  It had to meet the above criteria plus be one hundred acres or more, five  miles from a highway, preferably on a dead end road, not out in the open , adjacent to crown land with its own water source and timber source and with no close neighbors.

Well we found it and yesterday the deal closed so we now own 160 acres or prime prepper land. The adventure begins.
It may never happen. Best to be prepared just in case.

I can't wait for the snow to go. I have been all round it twice and across it once with  snow shoes. I have already lost weight!  :o

Right now we are feverously looking through house plans. As soon as the ground thaws  I want to put in a well and a septic system as well as get the basement dug. It turns out that finding the right house plan is as hard as finding the right piece of land but we need to decide on the plan before we start on the basement.
It may never happen. Best to be prepared just in case.

icrcc I will give you three  advice.THINK ,THINK, THINK., and after you built the house only than you will see what you should have done different.
I did my own  design , I just had hole dug up the rest did with my own hands, concrete, framing , finishing, electrical, plumbing.
After all was completed ,only than I saw what should be different.
Good luck,
Henry

I know what you mean Henry. I built a house but that was 30 years ago. I did everything myself then except I had the basement poured. We passed it the other day and it is still as good if not better than many of the other houses in the subdivision.  We have lived in five houses since then and although our current one is nice there are always issues and always things that can be improved.

ICRCC,

PM/email me, I can try to convert your ideas into a set of plans. I am not an architect or engineer, but I enjoy drawing house plans. No CAD, only hand drawn, line quality is pretty good for a guy like me.

Congrats on landing the dream that many here have!!!

Cheers,

MM.

We are starting our Earth sheltered house this year, domed construction, in the shape of a cross, 1600 square feet
Just awaiting response from the county on the blue prints and design specs.
Never stop...

With the snow only finally going last week, leaving a few pockets in the bush, I have started to explore the land. A couple of days ago I came across this pleasant little feature.

Thanks Range for the well wishes. Yes I still have it. I have spent the summer putting in the road 1/2 mile of it. Clearing the area for the house and developing a sand pit.  Right now I am putting in trails because at this time of the year it is easier to see through the bush.
