There are a few reasons why I use an alternator charging system rather than a power generating system :

1. Alternators are cheaper and easily fixed or replaced
2. Generators can cause voltage spikes, and require you to constantly keep an eye on your system(if powered by steam you have to keep your boiler at a constant temp)
3. with the use of battery banks/inverters if a component goes down you replace/fix right on site, and switch over to another bank.With a generator if it goes down everything goes down.

  Some examples: brushes get worn in the genset while you are fixing it you have 0 power, if an alternator goes down your banks will take the load while you replace it( in emergencies your vehicle alternator will work) As menttioned before the cost. Those were my main reasons although there were others, such as availability. As soon as I can figure out how to resize my pics I'll upload a shematic with notes. Keep those lights on in the meantime...

Yeah I got roped into a few things at first to, at least they took back every thing.Nothing wrong with the components just not the right aplication.

This a basic explanation of the system which I use. I left out fuse links,inverter placement,and the aplication of each inverter. I use 1 ought copper conductor to avoid heat and line loss issues, and have buried it in 1" PVC conduit. Hope you can read it alright, if not let me know...The entire system is about 14000 bucks, but if you start by buying the cheaper components first and putting aside some for the bigger stuff later you'd be surprised how quick it takes. Have fun with it.
